Mr. P. Explores... The Abandoned Belle Isle Zoo (Detroit, Michigan)
In this episode of Mr. P. Explores, we headed back to the Motor City (Detroit, Michigan) to check out the abandoned and overgrown Belle Isle Children's Zoo (sometimes known as Safaripark), which has been slowly and sadly deteriorating away since 2002. The zoo has been there since 1895 when it was established as the Detroit Zoo, and wa sa major destination for Detroit families up until 1947 when a new zoo was built on the mainland. The old zoo was rechristened the Children's Zoo and maintained that moniker up through the 1980's, when the whole establishment underwent a massive overhaul. Featuring raised deck-walks across the entire zoo, African-style buildings and a large range of exotic animals, the new zoo opened to major fanfare. Sadly, by the time the millenium rolled around, Detroit's coffers were in bad shape and the money to maintain the zoo ran out. In 2002, it closed for good, and despite several attempts to revive it, the funds could never be found. The place remains abandoned today, looking more like a tropical South American ruin, rife with hidden temples and restless natives, like something Indiana Jones would navigate himself through to snag a Nazi-melting artifact. Intrigued yet? Then come along on the adventure and check out the wreckage that is the Belle Island Zoo!

Mr P Explores... An Abandoned China Factory (Pennsylvania)
Переглядів 8035 років тому
In this adventure into the rural reaches of Pennsylvania, we investigated the remains of a vast complex that at one time (and for over a century) had crafted and manufactured fine china for restaurants, dining rooms and other fancy eating establishments and high class venues. To keep the location safe from further vandalism and otherwise unwanted tomfoolery, I have decided to omit the factory's...

"We had joy, we had fun We had seasons in the sun..." -Terry Jacks, "Seasons in the Sun" (1973) Decades ago and many, many summers into the past, local communities all around the Northeast Ohio region spent their hazy, hot afternoons basking in the sun on multi-colored chaise-lounges, sipping on an ice cold Coke in a waxed paper cup, allowing their feet to reach the sky on an old metal swing se...
Mr. P. Explores... The Abandoned Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church (Cleveland, Ohio)
Переглядів 1,5 тис.5 років тому
Several weeks ago, we returned to one of Cleveland's formerly amazing churches sadly left to neglect and ruin; the NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY CHURCH on Cleveland's East Side. While the church is, horrifyingly, almost beyond redemption due to vandals systematically ruining the insides and the elements having their way with the structure, there is still much beauty left here to be seen. ...
Mr. P. Explores... The Abandoned White Dove Mattress Factory (Cleveland, Ohio)

This past weekend we found ourselves on the silent and forlorn industrial streets of Cleveland in the frigid early morning temperatures to investigate yet another example of Cleveland's former glorious industrial past; the WHITE DOVE MATTRESS FACTORY. Empty of its former hustle and bustle, the five floors of this former business offered up many interesting features and surprises. While I'm stil...
Mr. P. Explores... An Abandoned Junior High School (Cleveland, Ohio)
Переглядів 1,5 тис.5 років тому
In this adventure, we return to the scene of one of Cleveland, Ohio's truest tragedies; an abandoned junior high school that became the victim of gross neglect, the restructuring of a bureaucratic nightmare and the slow burn of public education in Ohio. This was the second time we'd visited this school; the first round was to tour and document the structure and all that it contained via photogr...

The state of Ohio was once an industrial powerhouse, providing manufactured goods to people all across the country and employing millions. Sadly, as times have moved on and the manufacturing has taken off to other places in the world, many of the structures that once hummed and ratcheted with the sounds of production have been long since abandoned to the cruel elements, neglect and vandals. On ...

Переглядів 2,7 тис.5 років тому
Heading out to Kelleys Island, north of Sandusky, Ohio and out in the waters of Lake Erie, we explored some amazing places between this summer and fall, but none so beautiful and awe-inspiring as the old winery ruins that sit back in the woods beyond the line of sight, brooding like a medieval castle in the middle of some fairy-tale world. Our first trip to this magnificent spot this summer led...

On a recent tour of many old and abandoned rail sites in western Pennsylvania, our exploration group found itself far up in the hills near Clarion, PA, among the beautiful colors of the changing fall leaves in search of a rail line that had been built originally by the Franklin and Clearfield Railroad in 1909. The line had once tunneled through this rugged area and spanned the wide Clarion Rive...

I actually located another larger better image of the apse and God the Father, with a crown, is above the image of Christ in majesty, with the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove hovering between them. Closer to, but the not nearly the same, as what I thought was a very distinct memory, with a very different color palate. See enlarged (clicked) image at far right, if visible in the link: www.google.com/search?q=interior%20photos%20nativity%20bvm%20parish%20aetna%20rd%20cleveland%20oh&tbm=isch&tbs=rimg:CT2ac9FzcxBLYTorgvwrgTsxsgIRCgIIABAAOgQIARAAVfJPBz7AAgDYAgDgAgA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CCAQuIIBahcKEwiQ2fDNsb-EAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQHg&biw=1425&bih=669#imgrc=X4wrtKIVid1e8M

Memory is the strangest thing. I received my First Communion in this church, was an altar server, and attended its grade school 1967-1971. I thought I distinctly remembered the apse as being in sort of light pastelish tones with the center image being God the Father with our Lord seated at His right hand, with the Holy Spirit as a dove hovering above them.. What a shock to see that the image is simply Christ in majesty.

I remember the place well. Way back in the day I had a paper route, the Plain Dealer, that started at Cedar Point Rd, where I lived. It went all the way down to just past Sheldon Rd. Rode my bike on Ruple Rd every morning delivering newspapers. Anyone remember Rados Farm stand at Spafford Hill about 50 years ago?

People knocking the swimming should come out and watch all the kids enjoying themselves on summer days. The water quality is enhanced by a large fountain that aerates the water to reduce muck, odor and mosquitos. The Metroparks refreshes the sand from time to time -- as mentioned in this video -- so you're not seeing the beach as it normally is. The Metroparks is constructing buildings near the beach to enhance the swimmers' experience.

My earliest childhood memories are in that area. I was maybe 8 years old. My family lived on Westport Ave. I have been trying to locate the exact location of where my family's home was. I believe it is part of the sysco, or budget car rental, or brown parking lot now. I can't seem to find any old maps showing its exact location. I would love to get any information or pictures to help in my search.

I know that Berea used to have it's own bus line and the garage for it was on the west side of South Rocky River. Back in the seventies, you could still see where the entrance and exit were but they've since been graded or in some other way obfuscated. I think that the stone bridge that you explored in this video might have been part of those bus facilities but I can't be certain.

My Grandparents lived at the bottom of the hill. We played up the hill all through childhood. At the top of the hill, before the bridge, there used to be a house down the road on the left. It was similar to a log cabin, I believe at one time it was a hunting lodge. It was really cool inside - very different than anything I've ever seen. I wonder if it's still there and if anyone still lives there. Tremaine had their block parties on the property a couple years. Past the bridge there used to be foundations for I believe two homes that had burned down. At the bottom of the hill, if you want up the left side, was the same brick road, which is now grass and mud, you would have found Kuy-la Home, which was a retirement home. It was owned by the Russell family that lived at the bottom of the hill in the white house. Their drive used to be the same red bricks. Great memories of our childhood. Thanks for the video.

I grew up in Lorain County, Columbia Station, Berea, Elyria, Lorain. There are small quarries that werent filled in in Columbia Station, Jaquay Lake and its quarry, and Wildwood used to be a quarry before it became a swimming park. Berea drained Wallace Lake in the late 1990s and I walked way out in the middle of it, its only like 3 or 4 feet deep even when full. I think Berea filled in the quarries in the 50s with all the debris and rubble. There used to be a quarry also behind the Giant Eagle in Berea, nothing left of it now except stones laying around. I explored it also in the late 1990s.

Folks, please see this commenter's follow up note below in which he says that he meant Coe Lake, not Wallace Lake, was only 4 feet deep. There are some 30-40 ft deep sections in Wallace Lake!

Hey there, I like your vids. I grew up in Lorain County, in what used to be a small farm town of Columbia Station, near Berea. There are quarries there too, but small, not big like Amherst. They are the old Jaquay Lake and quarry, and Wildwood Lake was at first a quarry. You must be from Ohio somewhere to do all these vids of things in Ohio. I wanted to say I really liked the vid of the Hot Metal Bridge to US Steels Carrie Furnace in Pittsburgh.

I go here nearly annually with my dad. I always try to stop at 4:24 to get a picture with the ass graffiti, and we marked our initials and trip date on the first side room doorway at 10:35. on the right hand side of the tunnel there's a little drawing I did of Danny DeVito. there was an attempt to remove the graffiti on the tunnels so some of the more interesting or noticeable art is gone (including our initials) but it was quickly replaced with new tags, pictures, etc. They haven't taken away Danny DeVito yet though :)

The thing I miss most about the west side of Cleveland is the Metro parks, especially the Green Barn, we smoked alot of pot and played alot of Frizbee there in the 70's!

Super cool to see, well done video! I recall going over the northern river ford in the early 1980s in my parents car, when it was dry only. They built that bridge sometime in the mid 80s I’d guess. Was a little kid and I thought it was super cool, maybe a little scary because my mom said if their was too much river flow we would drown 🙃 that 1988 draught I recall that as the go to the pool whenever possible summer, lol.

As a kid the high dive scared me, I thought it was like the triple lindy from Back to School, lol. I also recall the shuffleboard was the old people and parents hanging out, something for everyone! Had fun times there but well, looks like it is no longer :-( Good to see nonetheless.
